As hot holidays spent soaking up the sun remain off the table, the idea of achieving a perfect tan feels a tad out of reach.
That inability to hop on a plane to a warm-weather location has prompted self-tanning products to be a popular alternative for people who are looking for a good glow, minus the sun exposure and hotel reservation.
According to a recent report, the sunless tanner market was estimated to reach US$804.9 million amid the global pandemic. The industry is expected to reach more than US$1 billion by the end of 2027. That’s a lot of sunless tanner.
Despite the increase in popularity, there’s still some apprehension about successfully applying self-tanning products at home.
In order to help take the mystery out of at-home tanning, we caught up with supermodel Ashley Graham, the new face of St. Tropez, to hear a few of her top tips. Speaking via Zoom for a virtual news conference to celebrate her new role and the release of the St. Tropez Tan x Ashley Graham Limited Edition Ultimate Glow Kit, Graham talked about her history with tanning, her go-to product for tricky-to-reach areas and more.
“I know everybody’s a little bit afraid of doing it at home. But there’s nothing to be afraid of,” Graham says. “It’s so easy.”
From bed to bottle
“In high school, I tanned in a bed and then I realized — bad girl. I went straight into self-tanning because it’s healthier for me. St. Tropez has been my go-to forever.”
Practise makes perfect
“I feel like, if I can do it, you can do it. And maybe that sounds so cliché but it’s true. I am not a makeup artist, I am not a hairdresser, I am not an artist. I am just a regular chick who used to go in a tanning bed and discovered that was not good for my skin. You have to learn along the way and figure out what’s best for your skills and how you’re applying it. You just learn.”
“The skin prep is so important. A lot of people say to not use soap, but I like to have some soap. I use something that is super-clean and doesn’t leave a residue. I also use an exfoliator, hardcore, everywhere. Sometimes I’ll shave and other times not. Then, when I get out, I lotion my hands, my feet, my elbows and my knees. And I do a generous amount.”
Less is more
“Because it dries so instantly, a little goes a long way. And don’t be afraid to just rub it in.”
Get hard-to-reach places with a spray
“The Face Purity Mist is how I get my back, my hands and I put it on my feet also. I also put it on my face — it is meant for the face — but I put it on all those other places as well.”
Maintain your tan
“I make sure that, whenever I’m going to shower the next morning, I don’t take a really hot shower. I take a lukewarm shower because I feel like the steam can manipulate (the tan) if you are jumping in the shower right away. Also, staying hydrated on top of the hydration you’ve already put on, so lotion and keeping up with face mists.”
