Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s investigating an incident after a 40-year-old man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night in Petrolia.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. Monday as the OPP were called to a house because of a man in a state of mental distress, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Tuesday morning. Officers secured the area and, a little more than three hours later, the emergency response team went into the back of the property and saw a man had suffered a gunshot wound.

He was taken to hospital and is in critical condition, the SIU said.

The wound is believed to have been self-inflicted, the SIU said. Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU investigates interactions with police that result in death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
